Fundraising Events

We are always eager to hear from individuals and organisations that are keen to host fundraising events from Pub Quizzes to Marathons, and everything in between. If you would like to hold an event on behalf of FRU please contact us on admin@thefru.org.uk.

FRU's 45th Birthday Events

This year is FRU's 45th Birthday and to celebrate, we have entered a number of fundraising events.  We have already seen two people undertake the 26.2 mile run in the London Marathon in April and one person has completed a 100 mile cycle for FRU's Birthday.

We are currently looking sponsorship of our swimmer, Holly Stout, who will be taking part in the Swim the Serpentine festival on Saturday 16th September.  Please see below for further details of these events.

Swim the Serpentine 2017 for FRU's 45th Birthday

Swim the Serpentine is a festival of open water swimming staged in the heart of London on Saturday 16 September 2017.  Up to 6,000 swimmers will swim one or two miles in open water in the mass participation event.

Holly Stout has taken on the arduous task of swimming one mile in the serpentine for FRU's 45th Birthday.

'Like most lawyers, I first learned about FRU when I was studying law at university. I thought it sounded like a great opportunity to get started on some 'real law' with 'real people' and I did the training days and took out my first case as soon as I could. The FRU cases I did were daunting. I was acutely conscious of my inexperience and at first wondered whether I could really be much assistance to clients. However, with the support of FRU's wonderful caseworkers I got through and quickly realised what a valuable service even complete novices like myself could provide to FRU's clients. Not being eligible for legal aid or able to afford representation, they would otherwise have had to represent themselves, something which it was apparent was for most of them a more than daunting prospect for which they were ill-equipped. For an amazing 45 years FRU has done a fantastic job of providing legal assistance where it is needed most. I was proud to serve on the management committee for a number of years and am delighted to have this opportunity to raise a bit of cash for FRU. I will be braving the murky waters of the Serpentine and attempting to swim a mile in under 45 mins. That surely deserves a bit of sponsorship!'

Please encourage and support Holly over her one mile swim through the murky waters of the serpentine by giving generously below.

RideLondon 2017 for FRU's 45th Birthday

Prudential RideLondon is an annual three-day festival of cycling which will take place over the weekend of 28-30 July 2017.

FRU has entered a keen cyclist, Stephen Ball who will participate in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100.

On Sunday 30th July Stephen will start at 05:45 in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, then follow a 100-mile route on closed roads through the capital and into Surrey’s stunning countryside. With leg-testing climbs and a route made famous by the world’s best cyclists at the London 2012 Olympics, it's a truly spectacular event for all involved. The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 finishes on The Mall in central London.

We hope that Stephen will have your support as he takes on this exciting challenge.

'I am a software engineer at Sainsbury's. I have done many cycling events, but this will be the first time I will have taken part in RideLondon-Surrey 100 and my first closed road event.'

Stephen will be raising much needed funding for FRU so please help encourage and support him by giving generously on his JustGiving page:

London Marathon 2017

FRU has entered two runners in to this years London Marathon.  We hope that they will have your support as they take on this exciting challenge.  They will each be raising much needed funding for FRU so please help encourage and support them.
Information about our runners and their JustGiving pag
es are below:

Ross McKeown of Charles Russell Speechlys LLP

I work in business development for Charles Russell Speechlys Private Client teams. Having run a half marathon in 2015, I am ready to step up to the next stage (kind of!).

The FRU is a valuable support network for those in the utmost need and I am delighted to be running on their behalf. The need for strong, third sector legal support is more true than ever as cuts to legal aid have left resources on their last legs. Anything I can do to contribute is a privilege.

Kate Chandler of 12KBW (Running under married name of Kate Little)

I am a specialist personal injury barrister at 12 King’s Bench Walk. This will be my third marathon (having run Brighton in 2015 and London last year). I was delighted to be offered a place to run London again this year for FRU.

The FRU is the largest single provider of pro bono services in the United Kingdom. It has two invaluable aims: first, to fill the gap created by the absence of public funding available for tribunal cases and, second, to provide students with an opportunity to learn about advocacy.  As a member of the Bar, I am honoured to be running on behalf of this worthwhile charity.

London Legal Walk 2017; Will you join us?

We are looking for volunteers to join us in walking to fundraise for FRU.

The 13th London Legal Walk is a 10km "after work" walk around central London.  It is a great opportunity to

get to know members of the team and raise money for FRU.  As an added bonus it also forms a great networking opportunity.

If you are unable to join the FRU walkers, please consider assisting us with marshalling the event. We understand that lots of you have busy sch

edules but any time you are able to give would be very welcome.

Send an email to admin@thefru.org.uk if you would like to join our team or help us with the event.

Please share the link to our donation page with your friends and colleagues so we can raise as much as possible: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/FRU2017

More information about the walk can be found here.

Walk the Thames for FRU 2016; Will you join us?

On Saturday 29th October FRU will be taking part in Walk the Thames.  We would love to beat last years efforts and have as many walkers as possible join our team and to help raise much needed funds.

Walk the Thames is a half marathon or full marathon event which you can walk, run or cycle. It is a great opportunity to have a pleasant (but still challenging) walk along the banks of the Thames.  More information about the event can be found here.

If you would like to join the FRU team, please send an email noting your interest and telling us if you are joining us for the half or full marathon.  We will send further information to walkers once they have registered with us.  Friends and family are also welcome to join the team.

If you are unable to take part in the walk, please consider donating to our teams efforts.  FRU's online donation page can be found here.

We do hope that you can join us.
