London Marathon 2019

This years London Marathon is taking place on Sunday 28th April.  Hamish McCallum has entered on behalf of FRU.  We hope that he will have your support as he takes on this exciting challenge.  He will  be raising much needed funding for FRU so please help encourage and support him.  Information about Hamish and his JustGiving page is below:

Hamish McCallum of Hickman and Rose Solicitors

I was called to the Bar last year, having completed my BPTC at City Law School, and now work at Hickman & Rose Solicitors as a Human Rights Paralegal before I commence pupillage.

During law school, I trained with FRU and have volunteered in several social security tribunals — helping clients to appeal their benefit decisions. Not only was this fantastic advocacy experience for me, but it meant helping real clients with real cases.

But they can only have that impact with donations. I am delighted to support their work by running in the London Marathon. Please do sponsor what you can today:

Prudential Ride London 2019

Prudential RideLondon is the world's greatest festival of cycling. The seventh edition will take place over the weekend of 3-4 August 2019.

FRU has entered a keen cyclist, Jack Gilliland who will participate in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100On Sunday 4th August Jack will start at 5:45 in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, then follow a 100-mile route on closed roads through the capital and into Surrey’s stunning countryside. With leg-testing climbs and a route made famous by the world’s best cyclists at the London 2012 Olympics, it's a truly spectacular event for all involved. The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 finishes on The Mall in central London, shortly before 150 professional cyclists race in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic on a similar route.

We hope that Jack will have your support as he takes on this exciting challenge.  Information about Jack and his JustGiving page is below:

Jack Gilliland

The Ministry of Justice has seen deeper cuts than any other government department in the last decade. The budget for legal aid has been cut by more than 40%.

Against this backdrop, charities like the Free Representation Unit ("FRU") have become vital sources of support for even more people. FRU provides legal advice, case preparation and advocacy support predominantly to those with legal problems in the fields of employment and social security, and who do not receive any legal aid.

But for FRU, the majority of its clients would be forced to conduct their own proceedings, including carrying out legal research and making submissions before a judge in court - a daunting challenge, even for an aspiring barrister.

FRU's services are free of charge, but they depend on donations. I'm not asking you to ride 100 miles - I'm on that - but please give something if you can.

Thank you.

London Legal Walk 2019; Will you join us?

We are looking for volunteers to join us in walking to fundraise for FRU.

FRU has been walking on the London Legal Walk since it started. The London Legal Walk is a 10km "after work" walk around central London and we're proud to be walking for the 15th time!  It is a great opportunity to get to know members of the team and raise money for FRU.  As an added bonus it also forms a great networking opportunity.

If you are unable to join the FRU walkers, please consider assisting us with marshalling the event. We understand that lots of you have busy schedules but any time you are able to give would be very welcome.

Send an email to admin@thefru.org.uk if you would like to join our team or help us with the event.

Please share the link to our donation page with your friends and colleagues so we can raise as much as possible:  https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/FRU

More information about the walk can be found here.

Walk the Thames for FRU 2016; Will you join us?

On Saturday 29th October FRU will be taking part in Walk the Thames.  We would love to beat last years efforts and have as many walkers as possible join our team and to help raise much needed funds.

Walk the Thames is a half marathon or full marathon event which you can walk, run or cycle. It is a great opportunity to have a pleasant (but still challenging) walk along the banks of the Thames.  More information about the event can be found here.

If you would like to join the FRU team, please send an email noting your interest and telling us if you are joining us for the half or full marathon.  We will send further information to walkers once they have registered with us.  Friends and family are also welcome to join the team.

If you are unable to take part in the walk, please consider donating to our teams efforts.  FRU's online donation page can be found here.

We do hope that you can join us.
