  • Holly seals £8k fundraisers with London Classics
    Tue, 07/18/2023 - 08:51

Incredible FRU fundraiser Holly Stout has completed three huge events to raise over £8000 to support our service. Holly has completed Swim the Serpentine (twice!), the London Marathon and Ride London to achieve what is known as the London Classics. Completing these events for FRU makes Holly our largest individual fundraiser.

Said Holly "As a student lawyer, I gained so much from the opportunity to make such a positive difference to people facing legal proceedings they found so stressful.  I am delighted to support FRU in its brilliant work. FRU is a fantastic organisation, providing advice and representation where it is needed most, to those who cannot afford to pay and in tribunals where legal aid is not available.  As a judge, I see how support from organisations such as FRU makes a significant contribution to the efficient administration of justice as well as being of enormous benefit to the individuals themselves.

I've now received the London Classics medal, inscribed "Et Ego Londinium Vici" ("I conquered London"). And I've done it all in aid of the FRU!"

FRU Chief Executive David Abbott said "Holly's achievement is incredible. She has swum, run and cycled 130 miles to support our service. Holly certainly has conquered London and we're so grateful that she has raised such a huge amount to continue our work. Holly deserves a well-earned rest now!".

Each year we need to raise £500k to maintain our service. To fundraise for FRU please see our fundraising page or email admin@thefru.org.uk.

  • Delegation from the Turkish Ministry of Justice visit FRU
    Tue, 07/18/2023 - 08:45

We were honoured to host a delegation of judges and academics from the Ministry of Justice in Turkey this week.

The delegation had identified FRU's model as being of interest in terms of expanding access to justice in Turkey.

The delegation heard from members of our staff team about their motivation for and experience of working with FRU. They were particularly interested to hear the experience of Linklaters LLP secondee Eloise Lloyd about the benefits of a FRU secondment as part of a training contract, and legal officers Daniel Hallstrom and James Miller on how FRU volunteering can assist pupillage applications.

FRU Chief Executive David Abbott said:

"FRU was invited by the British embassy in Turkey to host the delegation following interest in our work in the pro bono field. The discussion was wide ranging and included routes to qualification for British lawyers, the advantages of tribunals over traditional courts in enabling input from specialist decision makers, the impact of remote hearings on justice, the scope of the UK criminal injuries scheme, attitudes to pro bono in the legal profession and how FRU and other NGOs promote access to justice.

We were pleased that news of our work had reached Turkey and were keen to share knowledge about how similar challenges are addressed in our two countries. We would like to thank Gray's Inn for making conference facilities available to host the visit."
